Motherhood is nothing like on TV sitcoms.

It’s way harder.

Growing up, I absolutely loved feel-good family sitcoms. I mean, who wouldn’t find themselves captivated by the perfect families depicted on screen? They had beautiful homes, the kids were well-mannered, and the parents seemed to have everything together. I often admired the TV moms. They were like my mom but times 100! They baked, wore cute clothes, had the sweetest voices even in challenging situations, and they always had an answer for everything.

I just knew I’d grow up to be a mom like the ones I saw on those shows. Honestly, I was going to be even better than them…or so I thought. Reality is a lot different than carefully created scripts.

Perfect is impossible.

Practice makes perfect, right? Well, not in motherhood. There’s no practice — you just do. You’ll get some things right but also get a lot wrong. Those TV moms made everything look so easy but that’s not how it works outside of TV land.

I would put so much pressure on myself to be perfect. I saw other moms try to be perfect too. No matter how much we strive for perfection while raising our kids it just won't happen. Once you accept that, it makes child-raring feel way more doable.
